Summer Skin Care

imagesYou change your wardrobe come summer; it only makes sense to do the same with your skin care!  As our body acclimates to the climate change, it may be necessary to alter our skin care regiment to adjust to humidity, sun, and heat. Even the smallest switch-ups in your routine can make a difference with how your skin looks and feels.

CLEANSE.  For the face, try NeoStrata Foaming Cleanser, it gently exfoliates and removes all makeup and excess oils.  For the body, we recommend Green Envee Body Wash.  While some cleansers dry out the skin, this one actually  prevents dryness and flaking , enhances skin flexibility and  prevents premature aging.

TONE. If you’re starting to see  breakouts on your face and chest (typically a result of warmer weather), treat affected areas with either Neostrata Oil Control Gel or Image Clarifying Tonic.  Both will balance and clarify the skin by removing any excess oils/dirt.

EXFOLIATE.  For bright/smooth/soft skin, exfoliate the body  1-3 times a week. For the face we recommend trying Glo Brightening Polish, this gently removes any dead skin cells that have accumulated over time.   For the body, use Green Envee Body Scrub to polish the skin’s surface without disrupting its delicate balance.

MOISTURIZE. Sun exposure and temperature extremes (sweltering outdoors, then air conditioning once you’re inside) can leave skin tight and dry. Your usual lotion may feel a little too rich and heavy in the heat, so exchange it for a lighter formula. Try Image Hydrating Serum for the face and Green Envee’s Body Lotion for the body.  Both are non-greasy, lightweight, and absorbs easily into the skin.

SPF. You hear it time and time again for good reason!  Sunscreen will slow down the development of wrinkled, premature aging skin and protect against discoloration of the skin.  Our recommendation is to use Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 for the face and Elta MD UV SPF 45 Aero Spray for the body.

GET A SUNLESS TAN.  Instead of exposing yourself to damaging UV rays, get a spray tan!  We use top of the line Norvell products and our staff has advanced training, ensuring that you will leave with a flawless tan.  We also carry Norvell sunless tanning products for at home use to maintain your spray tan!

INDULGE. Come in once a month for a custom facial, or try a Microderm or (my favorite )Ultrasonic Facial.  We also recommend doing  a full body scrub with hydrating massage!   These are great ways to enhance all the work you’ve put into your new skin care regiment at home.  You can also check out our monthly specials throughout the summer.. we always customize our specials to the changing seasons!

The Art of Injectables

7083aSo I asked our nurse Pam, what makes a cosmetic injector GREAT at their profession?  I loved her answer so much that I had to blog about it!

“While a medical background and knowing the anatomy/physiology of the face is very important, getting desired results takes talent!   Success with cosmetic injectables such as botox requires an artist’s eye, as well as the art of listening.  In this profession, unfortunately, not everyone has this visual skill.  Just as no two patients are alike, no two injectors are the same.  The ability to listen, understand, and picture what the patient TRULY is asking for are important attributes to being a great cosmetic injector!  Nobody wants to look like they’ve been treated, and there is an art to producing natural looking results.  Whether you need lifting, plumping, softening, or smoothing; it takes a perceptive eye to know how much and where the injectable should be placed.  Being able to look at the face as a whole is also essential when determining the cause and effects of the aging face.  I am pleased to say that all the injectors here at our Chicago medical spa are skilled artists!  It’s something we seek out when hiring.”

Tips for Winter Skin Care

dani Harsh winters can mean dry skin!  Here are a few tips, from our esthetician Dani, on ways to help combat winter dryness!

EXFOLIATE ~  It’s important to exfoliate in the winter.  Using a mechanical scrub 1-2x per week can help exfoliate the top surface layers of the skin. Try Glo Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub or Glo Brightening Polish. Another great way to exfoliate and hydrate is by using Neostrata Cellular Restoration Night Cream.  It gently exfoliates the top layers of the skin using alpha hydroxy acid and retinol, while hydrating the skin with shea butter.

MOISTERIZE ~ Try switching to a heavier moisturizer.  This will keep your skin feeling hydrated longer.  Applying moisturizer creates a barrier on the skin that keeps oils from escaping, while shielding your face from harmful outside elements that cause dryness or irritation. We suggest IMAGE Hydrating Repair Cream.

PROTECT ~ Keep in mind that UV rays are just as strong in the winter as they are in the summer.  It is essential to continue to wear sun protection during the colder months.  The sun reflects more off of the snow than it does water, so make sure you don’t leave the house without your SPF.  We recommend Elta MD UV Physical SPF 41!

MAINTAIN ~ Keep up with your facial treatments every 4-6 weeks for extra exfoliation and added hydration.  We LOVE our ultrasonic facial for exfoliation and extractions.  It also infuses the skin with antioxidants and hydrators which will keep your skin looking and feeling healthy!

What’s the difference between a day spa and a medspa?

Over the last few years, medical spas have become popular among both men and women.  Some of you may be wondering, well what’s the difference between a day spa and a medspa? At first glance, they may seem similar, but there are important differences between the two.

Medical spas, also known as medspas, blend the best of two worlds — a relaxing spa experience, with the procedures and expertise found at a doctor’s office.  Medspas operate under licensed medical professionals who oversee or handle cosmetic concerns that fall under the medical realm, such as Botox and dermal fillers.  And while estheticians and massage therapists handle the more routine day spa therapies, they also undergo additional training beyond what their license may require.  Additionally, medspa estheticians are educated on medical grade skin care lines such as those found at a dermatologist office.  Day spa estheticians may only use non-clinical skin care products which are less effective.

Similar to typical day spas, pampering treatments such as massage, body wraps, and facials are performed at a medspa in a relaxing atmosphere.  Yet, unlike most day spas,  clients can get advanced treatments for the face and body such as medical grade chemical peels, laser hair removal and Exilis body contouring.

The ability to offer clients a combination of services, varying from corrective laser treatments to a soothing massage, is the greatest advantage of choosing a medspa.  So relax!  Choose the spa environment that best suits your needs.  Be pampered or go for something more aggressive.  Either way, the spa is a wonderful place to go to feel renewed!
