Is Juvederm Voluma an alternative to other volumizing fillers?

Cosmetic fillers are one of the most commonly used procedures to eliminate visible signs of aging with immediate results.  We are fortunate that there are now so many great injectable options to chose from!  Given the vast array of filler products currently available, the decision of which facial filler to use can be confusing.

Newly released JUVEDERM VOLUMA®  is an excellent alternative for those who are looking for a subtle, natural lift to the central cheek and cheekbone area.  In fact, it is the first and only FDA-approved filler to instantly add volume to the midface!  Compared to other volumizing fillers, the unique cross-linking of Juvederm VOLUMA® causes it to be a thicker, plumper gel than other hyaluronic acid fillers.  This allows for more of a lifting effect, making it ideal for adding fullness to the mid-face, and regaining the youthful curve to the cheeks that enhances the overall shape of the face.

Additionally, Juvederm VOLUMA®  is unique because it is less hydrophilic than other  JUVÉDERM® products.  This means it pulls less water to itself after injection. What does this mean for you? Less swelling!  Another advantage of Juvederm VOLUMA®  is that it comes with lidocaine anesthetic already in it! This helps numb the treatment area, improving patient comfort.

For most patients, Juvederm VOLUMA®  has been shown to last up to two years, although in some cases and areas, the duration of the effect may be shorter or longer. Supplemental treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results. Juvederm VOLUMA®  will often be combined with other fillers, like JUVÉDERM® for the nasal labial folds or Restylane® for the tear troughs and lips.

Botox Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Botox?

Botox is a purified form of Botulinum Toxin Type A. This is a neurotoxin that causes a temporary paralysis of the muscles being treated.

2. How does Botox works?

Botox blocks acetylcholine from binding with its receptor. This prevents the nerve impulse from signaling a muscle to contract. When the muscle can’t contract, it prevents lines from forming on the skin.

3. What is the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?

Botox is a neurotoxin; its target is a muscle. The ending result is the relaxation of a muscle, preventing it from contracting. Dermal fillers are used to fill areas that lack volume. There are several FDA approved dermal fillers in the U.S. Depending on the area to be treated, dermal fillers can help fill fine lines, moderate to deep folds in the skin, and even mid face cheek volume.

4. How long does Botox last?

Botox typically last 3-4 months. Some clients report a 2 month duration where some feel the effects last closer to 6 months.

5. Are Botox injections painful?

Botox is injected with a very fine and very short needle. Most practices use an insulin needle. It is not painless, but many would report very little discomfort.

6. What areas on my face can I get Botox injected?

Botox is FDA approved for glabellar lines and crow’s feet lines. There are several off label uses for Botox in the face. You can treat horizontal forehead lines, vertical lip lines, gummy smile, overactive DAO and mentalis muscles.

7. How long until I can see the final results after my first treatment?

Most patients start to see results in 3-5 days after treatment. It takes a full 2 weeks for the Botox product to be fully effective. If the lines being treated are deep, it can take several weeks for the lines to smooth completely even if there isn’t a muscle contraction causing the lines to crease.

8. Will I still be able to make facial expressions?

Absolutely! There is a natural way to treat with Botox. Some patients like the frozen look, but if you desire some movement of the muscles being treated it is possible.

9. Can facial muscles become weaker after Botox?

Overtime, the muscles being treated by Botox can atrophy. This means if you aren’t contracting or using the muscle, naturally it will weaken.

10. Can I have an allergic reaction to Botox?

There have been cases of allergic reaction to Botox. If you have several and/or severe allergies, it is important to compare your allergy list with the ingredients used to make Botox. Some reported cases have included symptoms such as itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or dizziness or feeling faint. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you are wheezing or have asthma symptoms, or if you become dizzy or faint.

11. What are the risks and side effects?

Botox may cause serious side effects that can be life threatening. Problems swallowing, speaking, or breathing, due to weakening of associated muscles, can be severe and result in loss of life. You are at the highest risk if these problems are pre-existing before injection. Swallowing problems may last for several months. The effect of botulinum toxin may affect areas away from the injection site and cause serious symptoms including: loss of strength and all-over muscle weakness, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids, hoarseness or change or loss of voice (dysphonia), trouble saying words clearly (dysarthria), loss of bladder control, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing. If this happens, do not drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities. If you have nerve or muscle conditions, you may be at increased risk for these side effects.

12. How often will I need Botox treatment?

Most patients repeat their treatment about every 3-4 months. As often as you need to keep up your desired result.

13. How is the recovery time?

You may have small raised red bumps on the skin immediately following injection. These bumps look like little mosquito bites. This typically goes away within 10-15 minutes post injection. Some patients experience a small bruise at the site of injection. This may take several days to heal.

14. Can I have Botox along with other skin care cosmetic treatments?

Yes. If you are getting a facial or other cosmetic treatment on the same day, you should have your facial/massage first and Botox last.

15. How do I know whether Botox or a dermal filler is right for me?

Gathering information online is a great start to your search, but you should meet with a medical professional that administers the treatments so they can assess your face and recommend appropriate treatments for you. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions or voice concerns that you may have.

Southwest Laser’s Advanced Hair Growth System

untitleduntitled dd Fight hair loss with our clinically proven & FDA cleared hair growth system.  This is ideal for those who have genetic hair loss such as pattern baldness or thinning hair.  With the combination of two different types of therapies, the Igrow helmet and our pharmaceutical grade hair growth serum, our system effectively suspends hair loss and ultimately returns thinning  hair to a fuller, thicker state.

Before and After of one of our employees

What kind of hair growth can I expect?

Clients report thicker, fuller and healthier hair.  Studies show more than 85% see results and the average hair growth is 35%, which is more than any other FDA approved device or topical serum on the market.   Those with receding hair lines not only state they see no further hair loss,  but are also seeing re-growth in the receded areas.

How does the system work?

Our system includes an Igrow helmet which effectively unclogs, stimulates, and nourishes unhealthy hair follicles, while generating cellular growth & skin cell turn over.  A pharmaceutical grade serum  is applies with a MicroRoller which penetrates the pores allowing the ingredients to absorb deeper.  Our serum contains a higher percentage of Minoxidil than other over-the-counter products, and has been proven clinically effective in both the prevention of hair loss and in establishing varying degrees of hair re-growth.

What type of technology does the Igrow helmet use?  How long has it been around for?

Igrow uses low level light therapy, which is a combination of LED and red laser light therapy.  The technology has been around for over 20 years.

Is the system easy to use?

Yes!  The Igrow helmet is yours to keep and should be used at home every other day for 6 months (25 mins per day.)  The pharmaceutical grade serum will be applied at our spa by a trained professional once a week for 6 weeks with a Microroller (which is also yours to keep.)

Do I have to buy the whole system?

No, we also sell the Igrow helmet separate.  Although we highly recommend using the full system.  Studies found that using laser light therapy  in conjunction with a hair growth serum gives greater results.

The Art of Injectables

7083aSo I asked our nurse Pam, what makes a cosmetic injector GREAT at their profession?  I loved her answer so much that I had to blog about it!

“While a medical background and knowing the anatomy/physiology of the face is very important, getting desired results takes talent!   Success with cosmetic injectables such as botox requires an artist’s eye, as well as the art of listening.  In this profession, unfortunately, not everyone has this visual skill.  Just as no two patients are alike, no two injectors are the same.  The ability to listen, understand, and picture what the patient TRULY is asking for are important attributes to being a great cosmetic injector!  Nobody wants to look like they’ve been treated, and there is an art to producing natural looking results.  Whether you need lifting, plumping, softening, or smoothing; it takes a perceptive eye to know how much and where the injectable should be placed.  Being able to look at the face as a whole is also essential when determining the cause and effects of the aging face.  I am pleased to say that all the injectors here at our Chicago medical spa are skilled artists!  It’s something we seek out when hiring.”

While I already knew Pam was an expert in her trade and the most enthusiastic person I know..  hearing this makes me value her opinion all the more and proud to work alongside her!  We All Love You Pam!!!

They’re Back!

For those of you who have been waiting, we have a new supply of Rose Gonzales bracelets!  We are stocked and ready for the holidays ..SO STOP BY and check out what’s new in our Bling Boutique!

Tips for Winter Skin Care

dani Harsh winters can mean dry skin!  Here are a few tips, from our esthetician Dani, on ways to help combat winter dryness!

EXFOLIATE ~  It’s important to exfoliate in the winter.  Using a mechanical scrub 1-2x per week can help exfoliate the top surface layers of the skin. Try Glo Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub or Glo Brightening Polish. Another great way to exfoliate and hydrate is by using Neostrata Cellular Restoration Night Cream.  It gently exfoliates the top layers of the skin using alpha hydroxy acid and retinol, while hydrating the skin with shea butter.

MOISTERIZE ~ Try switching to a heavier moisturizer.  This will keep your skin feeling hydrated longer.  Applying moisturizer creates a barrier on the skin that keeps oils from escaping, while shielding your face from harmful outside elements that cause dryness or irritation. We suggest IMAGE Hydrating Repair Cream.

PROTECT ~ Keep in mind that UV rays are just as strong in the winter as they are in the summer.  It is essential to continue to wear sun protection during the colder months.  The sun reflects more off of the snow than it does water, so make sure you don’t leave the house without your SPF.  We recommend Elta MD UV Physical SPF 41!

MAINTAIN ~ Keep up with your facial treatments every 4-6 weeks for extra exfoliation and added hydration.  We LOVE our ultrasonic facial for exfoliation and extractions.  It also infuses the skin with antioxidants and hydrators which will keep your skin looking and feeling healthy!

If you have any questions about what to do with your skin during the winter months, please call our office and talk to one of our skin care specialists!

What’s the difference between a day spa and a medspa?

Over the last few years, medical spas have become popular among both men and women.  Some of you may be wondering, well what’s the difference between a day spa and a medspa? At first glance, they may seem similar, but there are important differences between the two.

Medical spas, also known as medspas, blend the best of two worlds — a relaxing spa experience, with the procedures and expertise found at a doctor’s office.  Medspas operate under licensed medical professionals who oversee or handle cosmetic concerns that fall under the medical realm, such as Botox and dermal fillers.  And while estheticians and massage therapists handle the more routine day spa therapies, they also undergo additional training beyond what their license may require.  Additionally, medspa estheticians are educated on medical grade skin care lines such as those found at a dermatologist office.  Day spa estheticians may only use non-clinical skin care products which are less effective.

Similar to typical day spas, pampering treatments such as massage, body wraps, and facials are performed at a medspa in a relaxing atmosphere.  Yet, unlike most day spas,  clients can get advanced treatments for the face and body such as medical grade chemical peels, laser hair removal and Exilis body contouring.

The ability to offer clients a combination of services, varying from corrective laser treatments to a soothing massage, is the greatest advantage of choosing a medspa.  So relax!  Choose the spa environment that best suits your needs.  Be pampered or go for something more aggressive.  Either way, the spa is a wonderful place to go to feel renewed!
